Zack Sabre Jr (c) vs Hiroshi Tanahashi
RPW British Heavyweight Championship
Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, New York, United States
(reviewed 07/31/2019) Like this a lot better than their New Japan Cup match from earlier this year. Last time around I was frustrated by how the length and style of the match diverted from what made it interesting in the first place, whereas this time they stick to the good stuff. Zack goes after one of Tanahashi’s perennially busted arms and it takes him real far but instead of just powering through like he did in Hamamatsu, Tanahashi counters with his trusty legwork here. So, the two best matworkers in New Japan roll around, tricking and trapping each other in all sorts of holds in a snappy 15 minute match where nobody’s straying from the path long enough to forget about all the pain they’re supposed to be in. Great stuff. I especially liked the finish, with Tanahashi struggling to escape an increasingly perilous double armbar that looked like it was about to rip him in half.
