Jurn Simmons vs Travis Banks
Pro Wrestling World Cup Rest of the World Block Finals
Northumbria University Students’ Union, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom
(reviewed 11/05/2017) Hardly surprising but this is a lot of fun. Banks, with his one-track mind, tries to jump his opponent before the bell with his great tope suicida, but Jurn sees it coming and makes him pay for it. Jurn’s big enough and capable enough to be able to neutralize Banks’ speed and highflying fairly easily, doing so with a delightful amount of cocky charisma. The thing is, Banks is sort of undeniable as this tiny ball of energy and won’t ever stop coming at Jurn again and again. So the two just collide over and over and it makes for a fun match, helped by a crowd that is particularly into these two and the willingness to sacrifice some polish for a necessary level of desperation to keep this interesting. Check out the way Jurn teeters giving this guy who’s half his size a powerbomb late in the match. He’s not losing his balance, he’s just trying to put all the effort he can into the thing because this little Kiwi just will not quit. It’s a little touch but little touches like that are what made this match worthwhile.
