Korakuen Hall, Toyko, Japan

(reviewed 10/21/2017) So much to love here, at least for a dork like me. With the Okami & Kawakami team being better than two thirds of their opponents, there’s a lot of fun power level stuff that really tickles me, helped by the fact that Nomura is a guy who can punch above his weight in most situations. What’s more, this is one of the first matches where the budding moon vulcan team begins to come together, so you have stuff like Hideki refusing to tag in for Nomura and instead urges him to get in there and cut his teeth, later breaking up pins on his young partner like a defensive mama bear. Along with all of this is just a bunch of above-average strong division wrasslin’ in front of a receptive Korakuen crowd, so it’s not just story stuff to enjoy here. Hideki especially is good, as I think he works best against younger/less experienced/less good opponents who he can bully around. In the end, Nomura tries to hang with Kamitani and just can’t do it yet, eating the pin on Kamitani’s backdrop driver. Lovely midcard match that won’t blow anyone away but is a quiet little standout.
