Paul Robinson vs Spud
O2 Academy, Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
(reviewed 09/25/2017) Not a particularly great match or anything but certainly the best match of the night so far because it actually manages to be a match. The heel is actually a prick who does nefarious things instead of giving thumbs up and bantering. The face is actually a well-liked local boy who shines based on his personality and ability and not on a problematic, slightly predatory gay stereotype. It doesn’t sound like much (and it really isn’t), but all the matches that I was looking forward to on this show failed to supply both of those things and became muddled flashes of light that lacked someone to cheer for, someone to boo, or some spots to “ooh” and “aah” to. And without at least one of those aspects, I’ve got nothing to sink my teeth into, either as a viewer or specifically as a reviewer on this blog. This match, though, with a beaming Birmingham boy and a rat-faced southerner, supplies me with a face and heel that I both quite like as well as some neat junior heavyweight wrestling that isn’t too obvious or uninteresting, and while that doesn’t sound like much, it stands out in a big way on a show such as this.
