Matt Riddle (c) vs WALTER
PROGRESS Atlas Championship
O2 Academy, Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
(reviewed 10/03/2017) You couldn’t find two more diametrically opposed wrestlers. Riddle, as illustrated with his desire to open up this match with a big performative chop exchange, is all about dick measuring. WALTER, on the other hand, is about as no-nonsense as it gets and he’s very, very, very good at making cocky opponents eat their words, beating the tar out of them and then putting them to sleep. There’s lots of that here and it’s just great. I wasn’t thrilled by the last match these two had, nor their bout in the semi-finals of 16 Carat, but this one’s got a little something extra, I think. It might just be that they’re hitting each other harder here, laying on a little more sauce. In any case, this is my favorite match of theirs yet. It gets a little shouty and ham-fisted by the end with Riddle trying to cling to his title, but at this point that’s just how he works 90% of the time and it’s not bad enough here to drag things down.
