Fans Bring the Weapons Loser Leaves PROGRESS Match
Electric Ballroom, Camden, Greater London, England, United Kingdom
(reviewed 09/27/2017) Not a bad little loser leaves town match. It’s more 1999 WWF than 1981 CWA, sure, but if that’s the best I can expect from 2017 PROGRESS, then I’ll take it. I wouldn’t exactly call it gritty, but there’s plenty of quality hardcore wrestling here if you’re more inclined towards double stomps onto barbed wire boards than a straight right hand to a bloody forehead. There’s a lot, and I mean a lot, of embarrassing drama from one man in particular here (hitman cosplay playing off his opponent’s classic title match entrance, wide-eyed horror at opponent kicking out of move that has beaten him before, a couple of shouty in-match promos, etc.), but it sort of works in that this is the conclusion of a three-year feud between these two men, a feud that has defined both their careers as well as the history of PROGRESS itself. Even if I’m not thrilled with how it played out, I can’t blame these guys for wanting to go out with a bang.
