Jimmy Havoc vs Mark Haskins
Alexandra Palace, Haringey, Greater London, England, United Kingdom
(reviewed 10/04/2017) Quite a nice little deathmatch. It suffers a bit from a lack of direction, but that’s sort of a general flaw with 90% of deathmatches, especially in the west, so I’m not going to hold that against them here. The problems lie more in what exactly they’re playing with here, namely the glossy paper (for paper cuts between the fingers, mostly) and some fake-looking cinderblocks. The former are quite silly at this point and the latter are at least used well even if they crumble as soon as anyone touches them. Outside of that, there’s a lot to love here. Haskins works well in this environment due to his general intensity and proclivity to lean into whatever he’s doing. Likewise, if Havoc puts in even the smallest amount of effort he can have a good deathmatch, and he certainly came to play here. There’s nothing mindblowing in this one, to be sure, nothing especially inventive or gruesome, but 20 minutes of two guys well-suited to hitting each other with barbed wire bats and putting each other through tables is fun no matter how you slice it.
