Mark Haskins vs Mark Andrews
Number One Contender’s Match
Electric Ballroom, Camden, Greater London, England, United Kingdom
(reviewed 09/28/2017) Real bummer of a match here from probably my two favorite guys on the UK scene today. I really like these guys because their particular brands of fast-paced highspot wrestling aren’t too unrealistic or nauseating for me most of the time, and on top of that they manage to be believable babyfaces who I find compelling and sympathetic, which I find to be so rare in the current indie landscape. Here, facing each other, they lack the sort of strong heel character or opposing force to struggle against, so they trade spots back and forth for the entire match and never really make me feel for them as they’re doing so. What’s more, their spots are sloppy or entirely too typical at points, to the degree that by the end of the match they’re poorly doing “land on feet on missed SSP, do standing SSP into triangle choke” sequences poorly, which is sad to see. There’s not a sense of rising tension here, either, as they start hot out of the gate and keep that pace up for the entire match, which doesn’t so much feel exciting here as it feels monotonous, as there’s no progression on either side. Add to all of this a hackneyed draw for the finish and you’ve got a hell of a disappointing match.
