YAMATO vs Eita
King of Gate 2017 Block A Match
Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan
(reviewed 09/13/2017) You know how I know this show rules? This match, between two guys having god awful 2017s, is low key great. Most of the match is dedicated to grappling, which is a real hit-or-miss thing with these two, but for some reason or other they’re both mean and vengeful here and it makes for the best submission-based match I’ve seen in years in Dragon Gate. They’re both constantly scrambling for holds and looking to cut off their opponent’s attempts and taking pot shots and it’s just great. Things get less interesting down the stretch when they transition into the usual bomb-throwing back and forth, but most of the spots lead directly back into the grappling and the finish is a delightfully gross Gallaria, so I can’t complain too much. Like a good 70% of the DG I’ve watched so far this year, I expected to watch this and either not like it and not review it or not even finish it at all. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised instead.
