Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent?) vs The Leaders of the New School (Zack Sabre Jr & Marty Scurll)

(reviewed 09/04/2017) A pretty fun tag match here but one that’s real up and down. It fits squarely into the southern-style tag team match that is actually somewhat rare in PWG these days but works quite well in that setting if the teams have heat, both with each other and with the crowd. The LDRS spend most of this match isolating and unloading their arsenal on Trent before Chuck gets the hot tag and we get a whole bunch of tornado tag back-and-forth action to send us home. At its best this match feels real frantic and natural, a tight little brawl-heavy tag match with neat reversals and escalations and lots of energy. At its worst it suffers from the usual problems in PWG of being too cute or too condescending or too masturbatory (the crowd breaking into a dueling “fuck you Justin”/“let’s go Justin” chant when the LDRS distracted referee Justin Borden in order to beat down Trent was quite annoying in this regard). Sadly the latter outweighs the former by a few margins so while I really enjoy this match and think it’s sort of brilliant at a few moments, it falls into the usual pitfalls too much for me to really love it. Worth a watch, certainly, and especially for how it plays into the overarching ZSJ/Chuck story.
