Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada
G1 Climax Block B Match
Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan
(reviewed live) If you’re reading this, you know how this match goes. I’m not going to waste my time or your time trying to break it down beat by beat or try to cover how its narrative ebbs and flows throughout the match. I’ll just highlight two ways in which this match differs from its predecessors. Firstly, Okada’s neck is all banged up and it provides a lot of the emotional crux of this match along with the existing themes of Omega not being able to defeat Okada and Okada slowly cracking as this title reign goes on. Secondly, they slough off a lot of the pretense with this one. You know the Fast and the Furious movies and how they got progressively stupider until the point where they just leaned into it real hard? When they were all like “naw, this ain’t even about illegal street racing anymore, this is just a medium through which to supply dumb spectacles involving cars”? This match is like that. Partially, I’m sure, due to the time constraints, but also partially because of where this match falls in their feud, these two go right at it and begin throwing all sorts of big convoluted reversals and sequences out there right from the get go. There’s no pretense of an actual match or any sort of structure or a rise and fall in action. It’s just all action all the time. While I’m still not a fan of the matches these two have together, I can appreciate that sort of honesty.
