Sami Callihan (c) vs Keith Lee
AAW Heavyweight Championship
115 Bourbon Street, Merrionette Park, Illinois, United States
(reviewed 08/06/2017) After beating Elgin pretty cleanly, Callihan goes after Keith Lee legit, looking to repeat his success against an even bigger opponent. When Lee proves to be too insurmountable for the smaller Callihan, the champ reverts back to his old ways, going after the big Texan’s leg with a steel chair. A solid enough story and it helps carry this match that oddly feels a little lacking in action compared to previous defenses against Elgin, Ki, ACH, etc. I suppose a lot of that comes from Lee, who excels more in aura and crowd work than strict spotfests, and he does great here selling his leg while still coming across as this undeniable, unstoppable force. Callihan likewise feels desperate but also more confident and power hungry than last month. This makes for a pretty good match but one that feels like it’s stuck in third gear. Not quite first or second, as it gets moving pretty good by the end, but it’s clear that it’s not firing on all cylinders just yet. Callihan hits a silly Canadian Destroyer towards the end and tops it off with an even dumber chair shot that really rocks Lee and is pretty unnecessary.
