Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Hirooki Goto
G1 Climax Block A Match
Sendai Sun Plaza, Sendai, Japan
(reviewed 07/30/2017) Ok so, I was very explicitly told not to watch this by several friends, most of whom I trust. They said this was a bad match, a bad bad bad match that I would detest. Mostly they were wrong. This is a bad match, I think, but not anything I loathe. More than anything, it’s a sad match. It’s a match featuring a generational ace who is rapidly breaking down after working hard on a body that weren’t fit to keep working that hard. It’s a match featuring a solid B player who wasn’t seen as solid enough to warrant the spotlight and was strung along for ten years in second gear. It’s a match that tries to take these two sad stories from two sad figures and make their efforts against each other memorable and exciting. But it fails in doing that. It can’t turn back the clock or redo an entire career. It can’t make me care.
