Minoru Suzuki vs Juice Robinson
G1 Climax Block B Match
Big Pallete Fukushima, Fukushima, Japan
(reviewed 07/26/2017) So, while watching this, I was trying to determine why exactly I liked it so, so much more than the two matches which preceded it (Kojima vs Elgin and EVIL vs Tonga). I think what it comes down to, other than some sort of bias that I have towards these two and against at least one person in each of those previous matches, is that there’s a level of effort here lacking in the other two matches. They’re basically operating on the same framework; they keep things simple, mostly strike-based, occasionally diverting into submission or limb work sections. But with this match, you can see MiSu and Juice working so much harder, even if I wouldn’t describe it as working all that hard in the grand scheme of things. There’s a crispness to their striking, a vivacity to their selling. They’re doing the same ol’ match, but they’re not exactly going through the motions, at least not to the same degree as Elgin, et al. Combined with some good characterization, something these two are always good at, it makes for a very enjoyable match.
