Kenny Omega vs Toru Yano
G1 Climax Block B Match
Big Pallete Fukushima, Fukushima, Japan
(reviewed 07/26/2017) This got a lot of flack on the Twittersphere from the usual suspects and coming into this I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I used to really love Omega, especially his comedy-driven stuff, but have grown away from him a lot in recent years. I’ve always been a fan of Yano to some degree or another. But together, would I appreciate their efforts or despise them? Mostly it’s the former, and I’m glad of it. I’m still not ok with it in main event title matches, say, but for a situation like this, in the semi-main of a pretty minor G1 show, I’m more than ok with a bit of brevity thrown in to change the pace. Plus, the comedy itself is pretty funny, especially the stuff related to Omega and Yano having their legs tied together. It plays into the finish in an interesting way that I’m honestly surprised we haven’t seen before, and after an entire card of meaningless count out teases, this payoff felt appropriate. Fun stuff all around. Might not be your cup of tea, per se, but it’s certainly a nice palette cleanser.
