Kenny Omega vs EVIL
G1 Climax Block B Match
Fukuoka Citizen Gymnasium, Hakata, Japan
(reviewed 08/03/2017) A frantic match. Not sure how else to describe it. These two are good wrestlers, strictly speaking. Omega has a ton of bad habits and qualities I’ve come to hate over the years, but at the end of the day, I won’t call him bad. EVIL’s real good and while he’s been wavering a bit as of late, I like his particular brand of hard-hitting, vaguely heel-oriented wrestling. Here they’re just moving a little too fast for their own good, sadly. It’s a 23 minute match in which they’re moving a mile a minute (wait, now this is just an SAT question) and when you’re trying to sprint around and do crazy spots for that long, you’re going to color outside the lines a bit. There’s a lot of that here, not just in the late match either, but throughout the whole thing. It’s like they both downed three Red Bulls a half hour before the match and now their eyes won’t stop vibrating. They manage to string together some great spots in the process, but even their best stuff here is a little too wild for its own sake (that STO through the table is… woof). Still, hardly a bad match, but a match that could be improved dramatically if these two turned it down just a bit.
