The Miz (c) vs Dean Ambrose
WWE Intercontinental Championship
Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, Jacksonville, Florida, United States
(reviewed 01/05/2017) Knowing who wins this match might impede my enjoying it, but in any case, I’m giving it a go. They go right at it in and out of the ring, starting off real energetic, and Miz powders after Ambrose attempts a double underhook DDT. Miz really pusssyfoots around, refusing to get back in the ring, so Ambrose literally turns his back on the man to entice him back inside. Like a spooked animal, Miz slowly slinks back in the ring, rushing the challenger when he thinks it’s safe, and Ambrose cuts him off with a boot and tosses him hard to the floor. On the outside, Ambrose tosses him into the ring steps and the timekeeper’s area, topping it off with a big running elbow that earns him a two count back in the ring. When Miz again powders and consults with his wife, Ambrose tosses him onto the commentary table and then back in the ring, but when Maryse gets up in Ambrose’s face, it gives the champion time to come flying out of the ring with a dropkick to Ambrose. Miz tosses Ambrose into the ring steps as they cut to commercial. Back from the break, Ambrose is tossing Miz over the ropes and to the floor before hitting his big goofy elbow drop off the top. Some quick strikes and reversals see Ambrose get a two count off a rollup before Miz starts going after the challenger’s legs. Miz baits the man in on a rebound lariat attempt, looking for the Skull-Crushing Finale, but Ambrose reverses it into a victory roll for another two count. He follows it up with a swinging neckbreaker for another nearfall before climbing the ropes. Miz meets him with a punch and goes for a superplex, but Ambrose sends him down to the mat with a few strikes. Maryse gets up on the apron and jaws with Ambrose, giving Miz time to recover and reverse Ambrose’s flying nothing into a Skull-Crushing Finale in a solid nearfall. After a double down, Miz is the first to his feet and puts a series of kicks into Ambrose’s chest. Ambrose ducks the last one but catches it on the rebound, returning fire with a big, goofy rebound lariat that turns both men inside out. It’s super dumb but I LOVE IT. A double underhook DDT fails, so Ambrose clotheslines his opponent over the ropes and hits a tope suicida. Maryse gets up in his face and slaps him, and the referee goes to throw the match out, with Ambrose imploring him to just throw her out instead, and the crowd cheers when he does so. Taking advantage of the situation, Miz wallops Ambrose with the IC title for a huge nearfall that I’d have bit hard for if I didn’t know who was going to win this. Miz desperately scrambles for a Skull-Crushing Finale, but Ambrose reverses it into a double underhook DDT for the win. As the crowd cheers and the referee hands him the title, Ambrose stares at his defeated opponent with a stiff upper lip and a look that says “come ON, MOTHERFUCKER”. Fucking great stuff here. Fast, physical, fiery, and chock full of great action, this is some primo TV wrestling right here and will undoubtedly end up being one of the better TV main events of the year. Peep this if you haven’t.
