“Speedball” Mike Bailey vs ACH
16 Carat Gold Tournament 2017 First Round
Turbinenhalle, Oberhausen, Germany
(reviewed 03/16/2017) In some ways, this match was everything I want out of these two. In other ways, it’s everything I hate about their shticks and what indie wrestling fans are into. They start off with a dance-off and proceed into the usual sort of high spots these two do well, being sure to be as adorable and cheeky as they can be, which usually annoys me. But the second half of this match, once they really start going, is fairly great. ACH manages to combine his antics with some rock-solid wrestling and Bailey bumps his goddamn ass off for all of it. When Bailey makes his comeback, it’s a little more reserved but still exciting, completely avoiding the sort of overblown finishing stretch this sort of match could have. All in all, this feels like two separate matches, but really, it’s just how these guys do business these days, giving the people what they want. It’s just a shame that what “they” want is usually pretty far removed from what I want.
