John Klinger vs Cody Rhodes
16 Carat Gold Tournament 2017 Quarter-Finals
Turbinenhalle, Oberhausen, Germany
(reviewed 03/19/2017) Cody crowdsurfs his way to the ring for this one, which is fucking gross. Bad Bones responds by spearing him immediately, which makes him my favorite wrestler ever now. Jokes aside, this match is very smart. It was a good booking to begin with, as Cody is (inexplicably) super over with this crowd and Bad Bones is (inexplicably) really hated by this crowd. Klinger’s hyper-aggressive style gets the crowd excited while Cody makes his comeback, and although I’m turned off by his pandering WWE-ridden offense, these fans are real into it. A ref bump makes it look as if Klinger is going to steal this one, but Cody survives a superkick and is able to spit in his opponent’s eyes and hit a Cross Rhodes for a big ol’ nearfall that I bit as the finish. They milk it a bit longer than I think they should, but after a pair of Wrecking Ball Knees, Klinger wins the match to a chorus of boos. In a lot of ways, this might be my favorite Cody-on-the-indies match thus far, which is quite a recommendation, I think.
