The New Day vs AJ Styles & Chris Jericho – WWE RAW #1189

The New Day (Big E Langston & Kofi Kingston) (c) vs AJ Styles & Chris Jericho

WWE Tag Team Championship

Allstate Arena, Rosemont, Illinois, United States

(reviewed 01/17/2017) I remember hearing that this was real good, so despite my being unimpressed with Styles’ first few months in WWE and Jericho’s presence in the company these days, I’m going to give this a look. It proves to be a pretty enjoyable little TV title match. There’s solid action from the three men still able to bring solid action, and to his credit, Jericho isn’t exactly slowing things down here. AJ is bumping his ass off, doing his indie moves, and over-acting for the camera, really trying to play to every audience here. It feels a little too on the nose, but I’m not as troubled by it here as in other situations, partially due to how fast this match moves. The champs are outclassed here by these two not-quite-main-eventers, though their experience as a team gives them the edge they need to survive, and in the end, Big E hits Jericho with the Big Ending to retain the titles. Fun stuff here, speedy and fairly hard-hitting, helped along by a particularly good Rosemont crowd.
